Literature Text

Ida slouched down lower in her seat, glaring at the professor at the front of the room who was still lecturing about transporting from room to room. Apparently this time, the professor had upped the challenge and now they must transport to a room they’ve never been in before. “How is that even possible?” Ida mumbled angrily, ignoring the glare that the professor sends her way. He continues talking for another few minutes before the class is dismissed. Ida sits in her seat, unmoving, hoping that she could somehow make the professor change his mind about the assignment by glaring at him as he packs his papers and books and heads out the door. Sighing, Ida sits up straighter and surveys the room. She hadn’t been to any of the other classrooms besides the potion making room in her last assignment, but she figured the classrooms couldn’t be too different. With calculating eyes, Ida measures up the room and tries to call back on her memory of the other classroom. She figured that in order for the academy to project the different courses in equal light, the classrooms must all be pretty much the same size.

Finally pulling herself up from her seat, Ida makes her way to the front of the classroom and sits herself down by the light in the pillar. Ida raises a hand and places it on the wall just behind the pillar where it’s shadows cast and focuses. Her blue eyes are intent with concentration as her hand shifts into the shadows, followed by her arm, torso, and her entire body. Once Ida had fully blended into the shadows of the shadowmancy classroom, she probes with her mind to feel the shadowy forms of other rooms. Grasping the edge of a room, Ida uses her shadow tendrils to make out the shapes of the shadows of the room before she shifts herself along the shadows. When she opens her eyes again, she finds herself in the shadows of the large potion cabinet in the potion making room. Sighing in frustration, she emerges from the shadows and plops herself down on a nearby chair. “So much for transporting to a foreign room.” Ida mutters to herself. She glares at her hands as if they were the source of the problem and tries to recall what the professor had said.

Figuring she might have a better chance of trying in the potion making room, Ida puts a hand within the shadows of the potion cabinet and concentrates again. “Feel out the shadows” the professor had said. Immediately, Ida could feel the familiar shadow forms of the shadowmancy classroom, but she forced herself to move past it. Focusing on her senses, Ida reached out again, this time in a different direction. Slowly, the shadows presented themselves to her like a map and a small grin spread onto her face. She could sense the shadows of tables and chairs and cabinets and shifted herself into the largest shadow in the room. Once the shadows around her moved and settled, she found herself looking at the fiery-red hexing room. Drawing herself away from the shadows, she takes a few steps forward and regards the room littered with dolls and masks with contempt before letting out a chuckle. “Well… this would make for a great way of transportation.” Ida says to herself before she returns to the shadows and transports herself back to the shadowmancy classroom.
